A four‑hour documentary about Elon Musk continues to encounter obstacles on major social platforms, but TikTok announced on Sunday that the advertising account for the film has been reinstated after an error. The Hollywood Reporter said the film’s distributor, Bleecker Street, was informed by TikTok that the account had received a permanent suspension because of its political content.
The trailer for “Musk,” directed by Oscar‑winner Alex Gibney, was initially rejected by Meta and YouTube. Both platforms later approved the ads, with Meta attributing the earlier denial to a mistake. Gibney confirmed that the film’s international distributor, Universal, had hesitated about releasing “Musk,” but the company is now moving ahead with the project.
Musk’s own platform, X, has declined to run any ads for the documentary. TikTok’s U.S. operations are partially owned by Larry Ellison, a noted supporter of former President Donald Trump, a political stance shared by Musk.
“Musk” opened in four theaters last weekend and is now expanding to additional locations. The documentary is slated to stream on HBO next year; HBO is now part of Paramount/Skydance and is overseen by David Ellison, Larry Ellison’s son.
The story was first published on October 17 and has been updated to include TikTok’s statement that the advertising account has been restored.
