Spotify is rolling out a new Memberships program for podcasters, giving creators another way to earn money directly from their most dedicated listeners. The feature, first announced at the company’s Investor Day in May, lets podcasters set up tiered subscription options that grant fans access to exclusive content. Like Patreon’s tier system and YouTube’s channel memberships, each tier can carry a different price point and set of perks.
Creators will retain 90 percent of the revenue generated, with Spotify keeping the remaining 10 percent as a platform fee. The company says the program will debut in 34 markets, but only for podcasts that meet specific thresholds: at least 100 consumption hours, a minimum of 100 listeners or viewers, and three published episodes on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone.
The Memberships initiative builds on Spotify’s ongoing efforts to help podcasters monetize their work. It follows the 2024 Partner Program, which shares ad revenue and offers paid subscription options, and the original paid subscription platform introduced in 2021 that allowed creators to sell exclusive content.
