Spotify announced on Tuesday that it is rolling out paid memberships, giving podcasters a new way to earn money from their most dedicated listeners beyond traditional pay‑walled episodes. Creators can choose the benefits they want to provide, such as bonus audio or video, reduced advertising, early access to episodes, or any mix of these options. The concept was first shown at Spotify’s Investor Day in May, where the company also unveiled AI tools that let users ask questions about the content they are consuming and introduced new features for handling creator sponsorships. At that event, Spotify said memberships would “create a natural path to go deeper, unlocking new and exclusive experiences for fans and new revenue opportunities for creators.” The service is now being launched in 34 markets worldwide, including the United States.
The move is part of Spotify’s broader push to make its platform more appealing to podcast creators as it expands into video to take on rivals such as YouTube. While podcasters have long relied on advertising revenue, the new memberships aim to encourage fans to support creators by offering more than occasional bonus episodes. Creators retain 90 percent of the subscription revenue and can set up multiple tiers with different pricing to attract listeners at various commitment levels.
To be eligible, podcasters must host their shows on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, have logged at least 100 consumption hours, reached a minimum of 100 listeners or viewers, and published at least three episodes. Memberships are displayed on a show’s Spotify page, where fans can subscribe, pay, and instantly access the exclusive content. Spotify notes that purchases will be made through its website rather than through in‑app transactions.
A select group of shows will offer memberships at launch, including The Adam Friedland Show, Making Sense with Sam Harris, Shawn Ryan Show, The Sculpt Society, Two Hot Takes, and YMH Studios, which will roll the feature out across 12 of its programs. Memberships join Spotify’s existing monetization options such as advertising, the Spotify Partner Program, promotional tools, free trials and analytics. The company also plans to let creators add membership badges and welcome clips for fans in the near future.
