Review: Crystal Lake Stumbles Under Its Pam Voorhees Obsession

Peacock’s new series Crystal Lake does not immediately feel like another Friday the 13th movie, even though it is marketed as a prequel to the 1980 classic. (This review contains spoilers for the original film but steers clear of major revelations from Crystal Lake.)

Instead of recreating the familiar slasher formula, the show tries to blend tribute with fresh storytelling while finally giving Pamela Voorhees a proper origin. In the first movie, Pam Voorhees shocked audiences by emerging suddenly amid a ruthless killing spree of camp counselors, then confronting the final girl with a chilling line reminiscent of Norman Bates: “Kill her, mommy,” spoken in the voice of her drowned son, Jason.

Although the hockey‑masked Jason Voorhees later became the franchise’s most recognizable figure, his mother has remained a source of fascination for fans who knew little about her. She is decapitated after only about thirteen minutes on screen, and her ghost occasionally reappears in later installments. The actress who originally played Pam, Betsy Palmer, declined to return to the role, saying the character lacked depth. Crystal Lake attempts to fill that gap, but its heavy focus on Pam often feels more like an obsession than a balanced addition to the lore.
