European Telcos Unite on Direct‑to‑Device Satellite Plan to Challenge Starlink

Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone have signed a letter of intent that signals their interest in a collaborative bid for spectrum that could enable a European direct‑to‑device satellite service to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink. The four operators intend to provide the terrestrial component of the system, while a yet‑to‑be‑named satellite partner would supply the orbital constellation.

According to the statement, the partnership aims to deliver reliable connectivity in regions that are currently underserved, bolster the robustness of public communications networks, safeguard critical data flows, and foster the growth of a European satellite ecosystem. The companies say the initiative would help meet growing consumer demand for seamless coverage and enhance the resilience of essential services across the continent.
